Listed below are the study options available at English Language Matters, Dunedin. We offer a range of NZQA accredited courses to suit each student’s study requirements.
Courses vary in length and level, so to best fit your needs, you will be assessed before beginning your course, and enter at one of the levels offered. Entry is on any Monday, and teachers meet weekly to discuss students' progress so that you will move to the next level as soon as you are ready.
Throughout your study at English Language Matters you will be regularly assessed to ensure that you are working at your correct level and successfully achieving your English language goals.

English for Academic Studies
Certificate in English for Academic Studies (NZQA accredited course: level 3)
This course teaches you the English language skills you will require to perform successfully in the tertiary sector, with a focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening. Learn the language and techniques required to succeed in IELTS, TEFOL; and Cambridge examinations. You will be given the opportunity to practice IELTS interviews to develop confidence and prepare for exams.
An intermediate level of English is required for a student to enrol and benefit from English for Academic Studies.
English for Business Studies
Certificate in English for Business (NZQA accredited course: level 3)
English Language Matters has developed a course for those students required to enhance their everyday working English and communicate effectively in a business environment. Learn to use appropriate language in different contexts and professions. Discussions and forums will be facilitated by English Language Matters’ excellent teachers to improve your vocabulary, networking-skills and develop your English Language skills.

English for Communication Studies
Certificate in English for Communication (NZQA accredited course: level 3)
This course has been specifically tailored for students who want to improve their ‘street’ English. There is a focus on everyday language used in popular media and in general everyday interactions with native English speakers. Class time will focus on communication in Western cultures so that you can confidently work, study or play in your chosen environment. Discussions will be facilitated by English Language Matters’ excellent teachers to improve your vocabulary, confidence and English language skills. English for Communication Studies is an excellent pathway to real-world communication, and is ideal for visitors to New Zealand or migrants.
High School Preparation Studies
Certificate in Communication Studies
English Language Matters welcomes younger students to our school to prepare them for attending high school in New Zealand.
Course content includes intensive English, NZ culture, research and report writing skills. Students will learn grammar in a natural context with appropriate textbooks and materials. Students will learn to speak confidently with native English speakers who visit the class weekly and talk in small groups. At English Language Matters, students will gain the skills needed to assimilate into the New Zealand high school environment and feel confident in this new society.
Private Tuition
At English Language Matters, private English language lessons are always available on request and will be tailored to your specific study requirements. Once your level of English is established and outcomes understood, a programme will be developed specifically for you, whether it is Business English, preparation for an IELTS exam or High School studies. All private classes are NZ$55 per hour.
School Holiday Classes
Certificate in Communication Studies
High school students, from all over the world, come to English Language Matters during their school holidays to study English, with many students returning year after year. This is an excellent opportunity for students to improve their English language skills in a warm, caring environment. Some students choose to study for only 2 weeks; others choose to study for longer periods with us. Whatever you choose, our staff will be delighted to welcome you into the English Language Matters Family.
TESOL
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
EARN WHILE YOU TRAVEL!
A TESOL certification is a widely recognised qualification that will enable you to Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages, in New Zealand and overseas.

The course includes:
- 120 contact hours with experienced and knowledgeable tutors
- A minimum of six hours observed teaching practice
- Training and experience in 1 to 1 teaching
- Observation of experienced teachers
- A module on teaching young learners
- Input sessions on language awareness and teaching methodology
- The opportunity to sit the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)
